Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping declared the initial response to this month's massive earthquake a success and said Beijing will be ready to host the Summer Olympics despite the devastation and the rebuilding effort that is already under way.
In one of his first appearances before an international audience since being promoted to his post in March,Mr.Xi thanked the international community for providing assistance after the May 12 temblor, which killed more than 68,000 people. As of Wednesday, nearly 20,000 were still listed as missing.
Speaking here at a conference hosted by the Asia Society,Mr.Xi called the magnitude 7.9 earthquake, which struck southwestern China's Sichuan province, the worst natural disaster since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 in terms of the scope and level of damage.China has had 'great success in the initial stage of relief,' he said.
Mr.Xi,54 years old, holds a law degree and is the former top party official in Shanghai. The vice presidency in China is a largely ceremonial post, but it puts him in a likely position to succeed President Hu Jintao when his term ends five years from now.Mr.Xi has developed a reputation as an effective and business-friendly administrator who still keeps an eye on social issues.
His speech addressed the importance of maintaining sustainable growth and spreading the benefits of the growing economy more widely.'Development should be for the people,by the people and the fruits of development should be shared by the people,' he said.
Separately,China has asked Japanese soldiers to deliver relief aid in what would be the first significant military dispatch between the two countries since World War II,according to the Associated Press. The plan involves Japanese defense forces airlifting tents and other supplies to quake-hit areas.
China faces huge problems handling the disaster's effects and the rebuilding effort.Aftershocks continue to add to the death toll, and the government has allocated billions of dollars to the rescue and recovery effort.
Despite that,Mr.Xi said China will still be ready for the Olympic Games in August. The vice president is overseeing preparations for the Games.'We have the determination and confidence for the good preparation for the Olympic Games and the Paralympics as we have solemnly pledged,' Mr.Xi said.
