To learn a subject means that you are in the process of actually mastering the subject, that is you understand and remember.
To study means to apply an effort and a method in order to learn,
for instance you read the books, you write little abstracts,
you try to repeat, you solve problems related with the subject.
Usually the 'study' activity will end up with the 'learn' result, hence the
superposition of meanings, but of course everyone of us knows exceptions;
exceptional minds could even 'learn' their special subject without actually
studying it.
Sentence examples:
--- I studied History with a lot of effort, without actually learning it;
then I realized my mind was more set for Mathematics;
--- If you want to study in your life, it is better you pick a subject you really love, so that your progress in learning will be fast.
--- Let this boy decide the (foreign) language he wants to learn; it will be easiest for him to study.
