further和farther都有远的意思,但further多指抽象的,如further study学习上的进一步深造等,这里medical treatment也是抽象名词,所以不用farther（farther一般指距离上的远）

further是进一步
farther只能形容距离
further更远，但也可以是"更深入,更进一步" 如

两个都是far的比较级，不同的是farther是指实际距离上的更远，而further是指程度上更进一步
比如出国深造，用go abroad for further study，说的是学习的程度上更进一步，用further而不用farther
farther是只空间上，实际的更远
further是指抽象的更远，比如，进一步帮助、进一步研究、进一步调查等就可以用further啦。
